Nikon F100 | Reasons Why I Love Film | Rudy & Marta

The Nikon F100 is a camera that I’ve been looking at for a long time.  I wasn’t always inspired by film.  It was just something that went ahead and intrigued in but too scared to attempt.  It wasn’t until I saw film by The Framed Network that I actually started to really get interested in it.  My curiosity spiked.  I couldn’t help but want to learn more about this medium that I had no idea about.  It turns out that film is actually very similar to digital images, except for one important factor: Film is awesome.  There’s this whole organic feel to film.  There’s no need to worry about white balances and arranging ISO levels.  It is what it is, and the film will capture whatever it is that you see.

When I bought my Nikon F100, it was in respect of Tanja Lippert’s suggestion.  She mentioned several times that it’s her go to camera.  It uses all the lenses that she uses for her digital camera and has a familiar feel to the equipment.  I mentioned it to some of my friends that are photographers.  Some people went ahead and brought it to meetings, while others day dreamed of using the camera as I did.  Truth be told, the camera ran me about $250.  I told people I bought a new camera and I quickly added that I didn’t just throw thousands of dollars to B&H.  I just spent a few hundred on a humble Nikon F100 that would serve me well.

In part, film is great because it captures things the way that you see them.  One of the things that I tell my brides is that I love capturing things the way that we see them with our naked eye.  I mean, if you want me to edit in a unicorn for your session then by all means ask, but it’s not our forte or style.  Film does the capturing beautifully.  When there are multiple light sources, the colors don’t clash.  Have you ever been in a room where there’s fluorescent lights and incandescent lights?  Ever stand right in the middle of both of their lights?  Well, you would notice that one side of your face is white and almost a tinge of blue while your other side is warm with a little tinge of orange.

With a digital camera, you have to change the white balance to photograph for one light source.  When this happens, you have the other side of your face getting blown into super blue or super orange lighting (depending on which tone you compensate for).  With film, you need not worry.  The chemicals on the film strip will absorb light the way that we see it with our naked eye.  You don’t have to compensate for anything.  Have you ever been to a wedding and there was a photographer or videographer that had a stand with a huge bright light that was directed straight at the couple?  Yeah, that was to compensate for the lighting situation and clash of different light types.  Without it, we would see a multitude of lights that would like that trippy party in Across the Universe.

Old school is the new school with film.  I got my Nikon F100 with the intentions of using it at any and all of my shoots.  I love my Nikon.  It has always taken care of me and I have a multitude of lenses that I want to continue to use.  That F-Mount works great and I can still use my brand new lenses on that baby.  I love backward compatibility.   Everyone is bringing back old school styles, ideas, trends.  Is it easy?  You bet.  Adding a filter is easy as heck, but the soul of a picture is still missing.  The film retains that soul.  I only hope that the Nikon F100 will help me in capturing breathtaking images in the same fashion as other inspiring artists.

I’ve been using the Nikon F100 to take some images around town and I plan on using it in some of the upcoming engagement sessions and weddings.  Let’s see what comes from it.
