Copyright and Print Release, What’s the Difference | Wedding Tips

Questions about Copyright and Print Release are one of the most asked topics.  There’s always a lot of confusion when it comes to what each one is and how they differ.  I really want to dive into the difference of each one and what they are.  Marta and I know photographers that go with one option over the other one.

I also want to preface that I am not a lawyer.  What I’m saying here isn’t law.  I don’t know the in’s and out’s to the legal side of things.  I do know enough to explain the difference between the two when talking to couples about it.

“In the grand scheme of things there’s one big thing when talking about the difference between a copyright and print release and that’s ownership.”

In the grand scheme of things there’s one big thing when talking about the difference between a copyright and print release and that’s ownership.  If I were to provide a copyright release to a couple with their wedding images, then Rudy & Marta Photography, LLC relinquishes ownership of the images to whoever is listed in the release.  That means that we wouldn’t be able to share anything online, show other people your images, create and design albums for you or anything else.

If we were to provide a print release, then we would be able to share those images online.  Not only that, but we’d be able to create other things like albums, image boxes, and other things.  In the end, you’ll still be able to download your images and print them however you see fit.  This is what Marta and I provide to our wedding couples.  It’s definitely something that you should ask your wedding photographer during a consultation.

As always, Marta and I are here to help with couples that have any questions about anything.  Let us know.  We’re here to help.
