What Is Documentary Wedding Photography? (And Why It’s Not What You Think) | Orlando Wedding Photography
ORLANDO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
Here’s a scene we hear about all the time.
The ceremony just ended. You’re officially married. The person you love most is standing right next to you, and your guests — the people you actually care about — are gathered on the lawn, drinks in hand, laughing, tearing up, doing that thing families do when everyone is finally in the same room together.
And instead of being in the middle of all of it? You’re off somewhere with your photographer. Posed. Directed. “Chin up. Now look left. Now look at each other. Now laugh — but naturally.”
For two hours.
That’s not what we do. Not even close.

WHAT DOCUMENTARY WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY ACTUALLY MEANS
Documentary wedding photography – sometimes called photojournalistic wedding photography – is rooted in one simple idea: your wedding day is already a story worth telling. We don’t need to manufacture moments. We need to be in the right place to capture the ones that are already happening.
That means we’re watching. We’re reading the room. We’re positioned near your grandmother before your vows because we have a feeling she’s about to lose it in the best possible way. We’re close enough to catch the look your partner gives you when you walk in, the one that lasts maybe half a second before they pull themselves together.
Those are the images that will hang on your wall twenty years from now. Not the ones where you were told where to put your hands.

WHAT IT IS NOT
Documentary does not mean we show up and just point a camera at things.
There’s a real intention behind it. We know light. We know timing. We know how to move through a wedding quietly and without disrupting the natural flow of your day. We know when to get close and when to pull back. We know how to give you just enough direction to feel comfortable without turning your wedding into a photo session.
We also do portraits. Beautiful ones. But our approach is more like a natural direction than a posing checklist. We’ll put you somewhere with great light, maybe suggest a moment between you, and then let you actually be together. The best portrait we’ve ever taken of a couple wasn’t posed. They just forgot we were there.

WHY IT MATTERS FOR YOUR WEDDING DAY
Here’s what most couples don’t realize until it’s too late: the way your photographer works affects the entire shape of your day.
A photographer who needs two hours of posed portraits needs two hours of your time. That’s two hours away from your wedding party. That’s two hours your guests spend waiting. Two hours that, honestly, most couples say they barely remember because they were so focused on performing for the camera.
We don’t hijack your timeline. We protect your day. We want you to actually attend your own wedding — to hug your people, to eat the food you picked out, to feel the whole thing as it happens rather than watching it from behind a lens of performance anxiety.
That’s the real promise of documentary wedding photography. Not just beautiful images. A beautiful experience.

SO IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?
If you’re the kind of couple who’s been quietly dreading the “photo part” of your wedding day, documentary photography might be exactly what you’ve been looking for.
If you want images that actually look like you – not a version of you that was directed, adjusted, and repositioned – this is the approach.
We’ve been photographing weddings in Orlando and Central Florida since 2010, and the couples who resonate most with our style tend to say the same thing: they wanted to feel like themselves on their wedding day. Not like subjects in a shoot.
That’s what we’re here for.
If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet. Let’s find out if we’re the right fit.
