What to Wear to Your Engagement Photoshoot | ORLANDO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS
Every couple asks us this. Usually the week before their session, sometimes the night before, standing in front of a closet at ten at night, texting us photos of two different shirts.
Here’s the thing we tell everyone: we’re not going to give you a list of this year’s colors or the outfit that’s trending on Pinterest right now, because by the time you’re looking back at these photos in five years, that trend will look exactly like what it is – dated. What we care about is whether the outfit looks like you, moves with you, and doesn’t fight the photo for attention.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Matching head to toe is the fastest way to make two people look like a uniform instead of a couple. Pick a color palette instead – two or three tones that work together, and let each of you wear something different within it. One of you in a solid, the other in a subtle pattern. One in a deeper shade, the other lighter. It reads as intentional without looking staged.
Texture Does More Work Than Color
A plain shirt with another plain shirt photographs flat. Add texture, a knit sweater, linen, a jacket with some structure, and the photo has more to look at. This matters more than people think. It’s the difference between a photo that looks like a snapshot and one that looks like it belongs in your gallery.
Fewer, Smaller Patterns
Big logos, loud graphics, and busy prints pull the eye away from your faces, which is the opposite of what you want. If you love a pattern, keep it small and let it be the accent, not the whole outfit. Solids and simple textures hold up better across every kind of shot, from close-ups to the wide ones where you’re small in the frame and the light is doing half the work.
Dress for Where You’re Standing
We shoot all over Central Florida, so ‘where’ matters. A field session in July is a different outfit than an evening downtown or a spot near the water. Think about the setting before the outfit: what looks right there, and what you can actually be comfortable in for an hour outside in Florida.
Comfort Is Not Optional
If you can’t move in it, sit in it, or laugh in it without thinking about it, it’s the wrong outfit. Some of our favorite photos happen in the in-between moments, walking, talking, someone tripping a little on uneven ground, and none of that works if you’re worried about a zipper or a heel sinking into grass. Wear the shoes you can actually walk in. Bring a backup pair if you’re not sure.
A Few Small Rules That Hold Up Over Time
– Solids and simple textures over busy prints
– Coordinate your palette, don’t match outfits exactly
– Dress for the season and the location, not just the camera
– Comfort first, always, especially in Florida heat
– Bring one backup layer or accessory in case the light or weather shifts
What About Accessories?
Keep them simple. A few pieces that matter to you, a necklace, a watch, something with meaning, will read better in photos than a handful of trendy accessories competing for attention. If it’s not something you’d wear on a random Tuesday because you love it, it’s probably not going to add much to the photo either.
