Film Photography, Exploring new Possibilities | Rudy & Marta

Rudy here.  I’ve always been a fan of wedding photography.  There are some types that I’m not a fan of.  There are some things that people love so much that I think is cliche and dislike (read:  youarenotaphotographer.com).  One thing that has always fascinated me is film photography.  Something about it is just amazing.  It has this feel that’s so old school/vintage/freakin’ awesome.  I’ve always tried to find some way to make my images “feel” like film.  Unfortunately, it’s easier said than done.

“One thing that has always fascinated me is film photography.  Something about it is just amazing.  [Film] has this feel that’s so old school/vintage/freakin’ awesome.”

I read an e-book by Johnathan Canlas called “Film Is Not Dead”.  This is a guy that shoots strictly film.  I respect that.  To go where most people would shy away and thrive.  The book is actually a hard cover.  After reading the book I became more aware of my shots.  Instead of the kind of knowing what I was doing, I stopped and LOOKED.  One of the biggest differences between film and digital is the fact that you only have 24, 36, or 48 exposures (on 35mm film), in my opinion.  Each second you spend switching rolls, you lose potential shots.  It helps sharpen your eye.

I ordered a Nikon FM10 from KEH.com.  It’s a fully manual camera with none of the bells or whistles in today’s cameras.  It takes two LR44 batteries (hearing aid batteries) to power the built in light meter, and that’s it.  Everything else is manual.  I haven’t even developed my first roll of film, which I just got it yesterday.  I can’t help but love it though.  Taking a shot and not knowing whether it’s good or not is a huge test for me.  It’s sort of a challenge.  I love the mystery in it.  I do plan on getting myself a little Dark Room set up. Once I start getting used to it and actually get some decent shots I’ll be sharing. 🙂
