Mamiya 645J | A Great Birthday Present from the best wife | Rudy and Marta Photography

Marta and I have very close birthdays.  Mine is on the 22nd of November and her falls on the 24th.  We always try to go ahead and celebrate our birthdays in some sort of extravaganza, whether it be drinking and hanging out with friends or just spending time together (because time is so scarce for us).  Anyways, she surprised me with something that I didn’t expect.  I’m a gamer.  I play video games to take my mind off of things, to relax, and to enjoy an interactive story (see: any NaughtyDog game that came out on PS3).  What I’m getting at is that it’s easy for someone to get me a video game and call it a day or a gift card to BestBuy.  When Marta surprised me with a Mamiya 645J, I was astonished.  I didn’t expect that at all.  A few months back there was a huge bit of time that I wanted to get a Medium Format camera.  In fact, it was something that I still wanted, but I never had the chance to actually go out and get something on my own.  Mamiya 645J will be my first endeavor into the Medium Format world.

“Mamiya 645J will be my first endeavor into the Medium Format world.”

There’s a few things that people don’t know about Medium Format cameras, let alone medium format film.  Aside from the fact that they’re HUGE, they also have a bigger surface area to create awesome images.  What does that even mean?  Well, the bokeh in images is much more beautiful without having to worry about having wide open lenses.  In turn it also means that you have to take your time.  It’s so easy to go and get snap happy.  I’ve already talked about the pros and cons about film, but medium format takes it to another level.  I’m sure that Large format takes it even further (one format at a time, Rudy).  Anyways, there’s a whole world of difference between 35mm film and Medium Format (645, 67, etc.), but I’ll talk about that in a whole different post.  Trust me when I say that that portion of film photography deserves it’s own post.  I’ll also probably review the Mamiya 645j and what I like and don’t like about it in a different post.

“…there’s a whole world of difference between 35mm film and Medium Format (645, 67, etc.)…”

I have yet to really take the camera and really dissect it..  I’m looking at working with someone, so if anyone is interested, then feel free to shoot me a message on Facebook or shoot me an email here on our site.  I’m always up for trying new things, especially when it comes to film photography.  Something about it is magical.  Anyways, I can’t wait to dive into the world of medium format.  Can’t wait to take the Mamiya 645J out for a spin.  This is one excited geek here. 🙂
