Traveling Wedding Photographer | Tips for Photographers | Rudy & Marta

Being a traveling wedding photographer is one of those things that almost every photographer dreams about.  Being able to travel the world and photograph weddings in exotic locations is something that some photographers dream about.  Marta and I have started to book weddings in Europe during the summers and we’re more than excited to see what the future holds for us.

As many of you know, we were in Poland for the past month.  We were working with couples and checking out wedding venues for weddings next year.  We were travelling for Olie to be able to see his grandparents, and to plant the seeds for future business with engaged couples that haven’t met us yet.  I started to talk to new couples and introduce myself as a traveling wedding photographer.  The idea is so cool.  A lot of photographers in Florida are drawn to the New York wedding market.  Other photographers want to travel west.  Marta and I want to go to Europe.

“There are so many things to think about when you’re a traveling wedding photographer.”

Traveling to the Europe and back has it’s perks and drawbacks though.  There are so many things to think about when you’re a traveling wedding photographer.  The importance of the gear you take can make or break an event for you.  These are your tools of the craft after all.  Marta and I had a little taste of reality on the way back from Europe this time around though.  We had gone to through all the bells and whistles with airport security in Poland and Germany (which were super quick by the way).

Just like last time, we took our gear as a carry-on.  The same bag had our camera gear as well as a couple of other tech stuff.  Our laptop was in that bag as well.  Needless to say, it was heavy.  We flew with Lufthansa, which were awesome, by the way.  They made the flight with Olie very, very easy.

“After unpacking, we found something that every traveling wedding photographer dreads.  A broken lens.”

When we landed we were exhausted.  We went through customs with ease.  Thankfully, there weren’t any hiccups.  We made it home and started to unpack.  After unpacking, we found something that every traveling wedding photographer dreads.  A broken lens.  Well, almost.  We were shocked at first, but it was simply the UV Filter that was screwed over the lens.  I was scared for a quick second.  Especially with the beginning of the wedding season right around the corner.  After closer inspection, we realized that the lens was okay, and it was simply the filter that had shattered.  I know some photographers would say that the filter protected the lens, but I’m not so sure.  I’m just glad that it survived.  If not, then I’d have to give our insurance a call.  They’re great and fast, but I’d rather not have to go through any of it.

My conclusion, make sure you’re insured.  Especially when you’re travelling.  You never know what could happen with your gear.
