How to Make your Groom Stand Out | 3 Wedding Tips | Rudy & Marta

How to make a Groom Stand out?  Well, groomsmen have very little choice when it comes to the attire options that are available to them.  Being a wedding photographer, I’ve seen the best and the, well, not so best.  Not to say that there isn’t anything good, but you can tell by watching an episode of Mad Men that men’s style hasn’t changed much in the last half century.

Again, this isn’t a bad thing.  I just find it sad when a man doesn’t know how to wear a suit, let along wear a modern suit.  I’d like to hope that most men don’t think of the Rich Uncle Pennybags (the Monopoly man) when it comes to black and white attire.  When it comes to weddings, we have a little bit more control.

The rules of the game have changed, but ever so slightly.

How to Make a Groom Stand Out

1.  Don’t rent a tux, invest in a good suit

When I say invest in a good suit, I mean INVEST.  Get a tailored suit, and if you can’t, then buy a suit at a semi-annual sale and get it tailored to get it fitted or get “darts” on the suit.  Do yourself the favor.  The last thing that you want is to rent a generic tux that looks like McHammer could rock them.

Go for a Real Tie or Bow Tie

Don’t get clip-on’s.  Everyone can tell the difference between a clip on and a legit tie (or bow tie).  You will look awesome and will stand out from the crowd.  The ladies will love you for it, including the bride.

2.  Be Creative

We all know that this is the brides day, but let the guys choose what to wear.  All within reason, of course.  Rock the Converse sneakers, rock the bow ties, etc.  Have fun and pick something that will tell people who you are.  If you want to wear “Cocky” belt buckles (see: Agent Booth on Bones) then go for it.

Wear Matching Materials

I love wearing bow ties and vests.  If I can, I try to get matching socks.  I try to wear colors that look well together, but stand out individually.  You don’t want to blend in.  Black on black should only be worn at a funeral.  I try to stand out as much as I can.  Trust your wedding photographer when it comes to style.

3.  Be yourself

If you don’t feel comfortable in the threads, then it’ll show.  No matter what happens, you want to feel like a million bucks.  If you feel like a million bucks, the rest will work.  Confidence can be one of the differentiating factors in a good looking guy and just some other guy at the reception.  Seems easy enough, right?  Well, most guys simply don’t care enough, and it shows.  Be different.  Stand out.  Stand tall.  And resonate confidence (and awesomeness).

I’m no fashion guru by any means, but I’ve been told that I have a dapper look.  If you want to make your groom stand out, then feel free to follow my “Suit Up” board on Pinterest.  There you’ll find tips and tricks that I’ve found over the course of being a wedding photographer working locally and abroad.  If you have any questions, feel free to email me.  I’m an open book.  Just know that I’m a fan of the bowtie.
